Serious Cabernet from one of South Africa's Premier Estates
It is hard to be the follow up vintage to 2015 which got a lot of hype, but 2016 is turning out to be very good in its own right and for a place like Constantia the reds really shine.
We could go on and on and wax poetically about the history of this venerable South African institution having been established in 1685 almost 100 years before the Founding Fathers of the USA signed the Declaration of Independence. Groot Constantia is firmly fixed into South African wine lore as the focal point of where South Africa's history with the vine begins. The grounds of Groot Constantia tell the story of life in the 1700’s in Constantia, and the grand estate which had its glory days in the mid-1700’s has now been restored to its former glory.
The drought affected, warmer growing season of the 2016 vintage has helped winemaker Boela Gerber and team make a gorgeous, textbook Cabernet that when speaking in terms of its pricing is a tremendous value, especially in the context of premium domestic Cabernet.
Deep palate coating dark fruits flavors are layered with tobacco and cedar spice while the tannins are firm and counter the wine's mid palate suppleness perfectly. Made to age, this is showing glimpses of its potential out the gate, which says this should be an exceptional bottle of wine when given proper cellaring. We are offering the Groot Constantia Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 for $34.99 a bottle and $29.99 on a six bottle or more purchase. This wine over delivers, as many of the wines from Cape tend to do.
