Las Mulas Cabernet Rosé 2009

Las Mulas Cabernet Rosé 2009

Rosé comes in a broad spectrum of styles, from the sweeter style to the crisp and dry. We have not got this excited about a rosé in a long time, and if you are not a fan yet then you should really try a bottle of this little Chilean beauty.

Rosé is one of the most misunderstood wines out there. The common perception for a large majority of American consumers comes from white Zinfandel, which is unfortunate because it completely distorts any true representation of what a Rosé should be. Let’s give White Zin some respect, as it does have a following. Rosé can come in a plethora of styles, but it shouldn't be too sweet or candied. The New World style seems to be more fruit forward and more weighty in general than the Old World versions. That being said we have come across a very interesting Rosé from Chile produced by Miguel Torres, the Las Mulas Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé 2009. Made from certified organically grown grapes, this has a brilliant, translucent fuchsia color, with an assortment of lifted red berry aromas.
The wine has lovely, engaging fruit as soon as it hits the palate with a sweet cherry and strawberry component, which leads into a leaner tarter rasberry note playing nicely off of the sweeter fruit base. Crisp acidity and a touch of phenolic tannin on the finish brings everything to a dryer finish. The fruit is vibrant and engaging with surprising intensity and depth. We weren't sure what to expect when we were first shown this wine but on trying it we were impressed with its core of red fruits and depth of flavor. This is a warm weather wine but has the structure for all kinds of food matches, which says it can be enjoyed throughout the year. This will have a broad base of admirers who will be captivated by its delicious, juicy flavors without being overtly fruity.
