Meerlust Rubicon 2006

Meerlust Rubicon 2006

Meerlust is one of the most historic wine estates in the Cape. The estate was founded in 1693, which makes it over 300 years old. The modern era of wine making at the estate began in the early 1980’s with the first vintage of Meerlust Rubicon being produced in 1984.

We can proudly say that we sell more Rubicon than probably any one retailer in the United States. We aren't patting ourselves on the back, we are just stating a simple fact. The reason why we sell so much Rubicon is twofold. Firstly, the obvious reason is that we are specialists in the South African category and secondly, more importantly, Rubicon has consistently represented one the best values on a red Bordeaux style blend from just about anywhere. It is one of South Africa's Icon wines but is popularity goes way beyond its South African roots. Quality speaks for itself and consistency and value gives it its universal appeal.

The 2006 Rubicon was recently released and after trying it we feel it is another stellar effort and will get the reviews to justify it. Under the guidance of winemaker Chris Williams, this being his second vintage at the estate, the Meerlust Rubicon 2006 shows exceptional fruit purity with just the right amount of complimentary nuances, a perfect bridge between the New World and Old World. The style Chris seems to be striving for leans towards vibrant, fresh fruit while still retaining elegance, and a suppleness to the fruit with a beautiful, harmonized, sleek tannin backbone that says you can drink it young but it will still age for years.
