This Malbec from Patagonia checks all the boxes
When we were presented with this wine we had little reference other than it came from our friends at Tapiz who have a number of well-made Argentine Malbec in the market
Through their national importer Vino del Sol, who specializes in Argentine wines, Tapiz has become quite a valuable brand in the USA with their over-delivering value brand Zolo. In a move to expand its portfolio base and explore new terroirs in Argentina, Vino del Sol went to the cooler environs of coastal Patagonia where they have created the Wapisa label. The story becomes more compelling with the fact that overseeing the project is Jean-Claude Berrouet, former winemaker at Bordeaux's legendary Chateau Petrus and also at Dominus Estate in Napa.
Bringing even more to the story of this unknown winery is that it was also reviewed earlier this year, where the Wapisa Malbec 2016 earned an eye-catching 95 pts James Suckling. We were initially a little skeptical but after we were able work this wine for a few of days to see how it would hold up we can honestly say any doubts we had were put to rest. This is a serious cool climate Malbec with a savory cast to its deep, dark fruit that is not like any Malbec you will try from its more northerly neighbors. We are offering this exceptional Patagonian Malbec for $17.99 a bottle and $16.19 on a six bottle or more purchase. What a great way to make its debut into our market.
